<image:title>About Me - “Other people can only meet us as deeply as we’ve met ourselves.”</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes we need change. And sometimes, there are very good reasons to stay the same. Let’s figure out what you want and how I can help. I was born in China, grew up in Japan, finished middle school in Canada and graduated high school in Texas. Having interacted with people in very different cultures, I was very interested in the questions of the mind, identity, human behavior, and what gives us meaning. I graduated Harvard University with a major in evolutionary biology and an interest in understanding of how the brain creates the mind. I completed medical school and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital where I came to appreciate both how all-encompassing mental illness can be and how much difference psychiatric treatment can make. I also spent part of my time as a consulting psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins University’s Counseling Center. I am board-certified in adult psychiatry and have a medical license in both Maryland and Washington. In terms of my academic interests, I co-authored the chapter, “Major Depressive Disorder” in the international reference book, Tasman’s Psychiatry, 5th ed. In addition to the diagnosis, characteristics, and treatment of major depressive disorder, I also explored how culture can—and can’t—influence the expression and assessment of major depression. I encourage you to take a look if you’re interested! What I can tell from having lived in many cultures—and having a deep personal interest in why people do what they do—is that there is far greater variation between each individual than there is between cultures, nations, or race. It is the details that really matter when it comes to the big questions of our lives. I love practicing psychiatry. If you think I can help, please reach out to me. I look forward to hearing your story and working with you to get better.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - What I treat</image:title>
<image:caption>I provide a combination of medication management and trauma informed psychotherapy. In particular, I offer a combination of CBT and EMDR. My treatment philosophy is grounded in the belief that every behavior made sense when it first formed. Change becomes possible only when we’re willing to see these patterns clearly—not just the dysfunctional or painful parts, but also the ways they once reflected something good or protective in us. Change can be hard, but is always possible, and medication can play an important role in this process. My practice is best suited for those seeking help with depression, anxiety, mood regulation, or trauma. I focus on treating major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, specific phobias, PTSD, complex PTSD, and ADHD. I do not turn patients away because of the severity or complexity of their history; if you are seeking help for these conditions, I feel confident I can help. I am not the right clinician for primary concerns related to psychosis from schizophrenia spectrum disorders, active substance use, eating disorders, gender dysphoria, severe behavioral challenges from autism, psychiatric symptoms of dementia, or paraphilic/sexual disorders. While I can address these at a general level, I believe the best care comes from specialists in those areas. My approach is pragmatic: the most effective treatment is the one you are genuinely prepared to engage in. I will offer recommendations, but the choice is always yours. My aim is for patients to feel empowered and supported, not coerced.</image:caption>
